In the Hollywood of the 40s and 50s, Frank is therefore doubly burdened: not only by his leftwing politics, but also by his sexuality. It is in this dark political atmosphere that Frank must make his way, and the novel is a reckoning of the choices he was forced to make, a gradual revelation of what would befall him and his friends and colleagues, of the price that all would finally have to pay.
Flanery, an American long resident in London, is an accomplished novelist; his debut, Absolution , was longlisted for the Guardian first book award and the Desmond Elliott prize, and he writes with skill and conviction. Occasionally the detail is overwhelming; a trim in the final edit would not have gone amiss.
It is, however, somewhat too accurate in its noirish B-movie sensibility to be wholly satisfying.
